Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway boasts new travel experience thanks to modern rolling stock

Marking its 100-year anniversary with a leap into the future, the Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway welcomed in October the first of eight state-of-the-art trains to its fleet. These modern trains are designed to elevate the travel experience, blending comfort and innovation on one of the most picturesque
railway routes in Europe.

The Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway: a scenic treasure
Recognised as one of Europe’s most enchanting rail journeys, the Vigezzina Centovalli Railway connects Locarno in Switzerland with Domodossola in Italy, traversing lush, multi-coloured forests and charming valleys that give this route its name – Centovalli, or “Hundred Valleys.”
This route exemplifies nature’s splendour, showcasing breathtaking vistas and access to an area rich in cultural and natural heritage.

The new trains: comfort meets innovation
On this unique route, eight new trains will operate, setting new standards in rail comfort. The spacious interiors accommodate up to 142 passengers, with wheelchair-accessible areas and storage for up to four bicycles, making the trains suitable for a variety of travel needs.
Onboard, multilingual audio guides enhance the journey with stories and insights about the region.

Enhanced connectivity and experience
The new trains not only offer increased comfort but also more frequent connections. From 2025, the Locarno–Intragna–Camedo route will provide hourly services, with twice-hourly connections on the Locarno–Intragna stretch starting in 2028. These more frequent services will facilitate seamless exploration of the Centovalli’s many attractions, including picturesque villages and lesser known hiking trails.

Highlights of Locarno and beyond
Locarno, located on the shores of Lake Maggiore and named Switzerland’s most beautiful small town in 2024, embodies a distinct Italian charm. The Italian language dominates the region, which is renowned for its vibrant cultural offerings, such as the Locarno Film Festival and the Moon & Stars music festival. Seasonal events, including Christmas markets in Domodossola and Santa Maria Maggiore, further enhance the cultural richness of the area.

Notable stops along the route
Key locations along the Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway include Intragna, home to the highest bell tower in Canton Ticino and opportunities to bake bread in an ancient stone oven. Across the Italian border, Santa Maria Maggiore hosts its renowned Chimney Sweep Festival,
while Domodossola’s Saturday markets and the UNESCO-listed Sacro Monte Calvario provide opportunities to experience authentic Italian culture and history.

A unique offering for the travel industry
The Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway combines Swiss precision with Italian flair, offering a distinctive travel experience for inclusion in curated itineraries. Seasonal highlights, such as the vibrant hues of autumn foliage or the serene charm of summer, ensure its appeal across diverse traveller demographics. The Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway’s new generation of trains delivers modern convenience and accessibility, aligning with the high standards expected in the travel industry.
This century-old route continues to evolve, maintaining its position as a vital connection between Switzerland and Italy while celebrating its heritage and natural beauty.
