From Realp to Oberwald

The Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway brings to life the golden age of steam railways in Switzerland. 

The journey takes you from Realp through the magnificent mountain landscape of the Central Alps, along the historic route of the Glacier Express to Oberwald in the canton of Valais. The highest point of 2’160 metres above sea level is reached during the stop at the Furka station. 

  • Route: Realp–Furka–Gletsch–Oberwald 
  • Distance: 18 km 
  • Travel duration: 120-160 minutes 
  • Summer service only (June to September) 
  • Over 100-year-old steam locomotives with combined adhesion and rack drive of Swiss design 
  • Restored first and second class passenger cars from the 1930s 
  • Railway line fully opened in 1926
