Many travelers know the Seven Churfirsten from passing by Lake Walen, whether by car or train. But why not stand at the top and look down for a change? The easiest access is through the picturesque Toggenburg region: take the funicular from Unterwasser, followed by the cable car from Iltios, to reach Chäserrugg. At the summit, visitors are welcomed by world-class architecture from Herzog & de Meuron, featuring the mountain station and summit restaurant, transforming the excursion into a cultural experience. Meanwhile, the Rosenboden plateau invites guests to enjoy a panoramic circular hike in both summer and winter.
- Altitude: 2’262 m above sea level
- Accessibility: Travel by public transport via Nesslau-Neu St. Johann or Buchs SG to the stop “Unterwasser, Chäserrugg Bahnen.” Take the funicular from Unterwasser station to Iltios, then the cable car to Chäserrugg.
- Travel time: Approximately 30 minutes from the valley to the summit.
- Summer activities: Sunrise rides, hiking along the panoramic trail on the Rosenboden plateau, Flower Trail, Sound Trail, Legends Trail on Alp Sellamatt, and discovering authentic traditions during the alpine ascent.
- Winter activities: Skiing, winter hiking on the Rosenboden plateau and Alp Sellamatt, sledding, and cross-country skiing.
- Special features: Part of the Federal Inventory of Landscapes and Natural Monuments, awarded “Landscape of the Year 2021,” and home to six buildings designed by architects Herzog & de Meuron, spanning from the summit to the valley.
